Looking to be part of a great game - join FMMBA as an Umpire! Click Here to Register!
FMMBA is always looking for people who are willing to Umpire. Umpires are an integral part of the game, without Umpires our young players will be unable to play! Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Association needs to recruit officials into the game of baseball with the greatest need being to support the House League at 11U, 13U, and 15U Levels.
The house league baseball season starts at the beginning of May and finishes at the end of June. League games are normally held on weeknights and tournaments are played on weekends. There is a mid season and year end tournament for the 9U, 11U, 13U, and 15U divisions. Umpires will likely work as many games a week as they are able as the shortage of baseball officials in this area is quite severe.
Being a baseball umpire is a great way for youngsters to develop leadership skills and confidence. Many of our Umpires are also baseball players in FMMBA. Umpiring allows them to be engaged in a different aspect of the game that provides an elevated level of learning and experiences. FMMBA encourages and assists in the development of Umpires. Given the importance of umpires to the game of baseball, umpires are expected to honour their commitments and treat their duties maturely, conscientiously and responsibly.
Current and former Players, Parents, Grandparents, and Fans all make good Umpires with a little bit of training. Umpires must be at least Peewee age to become a FMMBA Umpire, adults are welcome. All umpires must renew or upgrade qualifications each year.
Umpiring is a lot of fun and it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Don't worry that you may not know all the rules…we teach you all about it. To become a baseball umpire you must attend a clinic.
FMMBA offers clinics during the following time slots:
Level 1 - April 2
Level 1 - To register for this course you must be born in 2010 and older. With level 1 you may umpire most levels at a local and regional level all depending on your age and experience level. You must attend a level 1 clinic to achieve Level 1 status.
Level 2 - April 3
Level 2 - With level 2 you may umpire most levels at a local, regional and occasionally provincial level all depending on your age and experience level. You must have attended and passed level 1 clinic for 2 years, to achieve Level 2 status.
Cost for umpire clinic this year is $60 for level 1 (which you will be reimbursed who you umpire 6 games) Level 2 is $75 (which you will be reimbursed once you umpire 6 games).
Umpires should bring a note pad and a pen/pencil. Please wear suitable clothing like track pants or something as there will be a lot of running around and doing "umpire" mechanics/movements. Also bring a glove and if you have a mask, then bring that too(this is not mandatory). The instructor will try to simulate game situations so they will get used to wearing the equipment in that situation.
Please come 15 minutes early to complete Baseball Alberta registration form.
For anyone interested in level 3 please let us know by emailing umpire@fmmba.ca
Level 4's now must receive an invite from Baseball Alberta Umpire Supervisor, Jon Oko. Generally, if an umpire has achieved his Level 3 and has attended a clinic, then he/she will get an invitation to the Baseball Alberta annual Level 4/5 Superclinic held each year usually either in Edmonton or Calgary areas. This is a great summer job for players looking at making a little extra money over the ball season.
